Confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases for Cardiff University staff and students.

Last updated: 03/12/2020 10:51. We aim to update this page by midday each working day. Data from the weekend will be added on Monday.

About this data

We have around 30,000 students and 7,000 staff members. The data we have included here is for:

  • Cardiff University students who are living in Cardiff
  • Cardiff University staff who are working on campus.

Student data

Positive NHS test results

Positive NHS test result data for students living in Cardiff University halls of residence is provided by Public Health Wales. Data for all other students is based on students informing the University that they have received a positive NHS test result. For each day we show the new confirmed cases for that day. This does not include the number of cases from previous days and is not a cumulative total.

04/11/20 - Changes to reporting positive NHS test results for students

We have changed how we report student cases due to improvements in how we receive test data. Initially we relied on students informing the University they had received a positive NHS COVID-19 test. We have been receiving Public Health Wales (PHW) data for students in our halls of residences with positive NHS test results since 7 October. This has allowed us to update student records directly from 2 November using PHW data. We have also chosen the optimum time of day to run reports to ensure all records are counted. This ensures that we have the best information to inform decisions to support the health and wellbeing of our students and staff, and to provide data comparable with other universities for national tracking and comparison purposes.

Due to these changes we have reviewed previous positive NHS test results data for students and removed some duplication. As the data needed to be re-run to give this consistency, previously published positive NHS test results data for students has been re-issued. We are continuing to monitor all categories of isolation and to work very closely with the local health authorities.

Students who are self-isolating

Our student community are following advice to self-isolate and proactively informing the University that they are doing so. The data are current daily totals based on students who have told us they are self-isolating and the reason they have given.

Staff data

This data is based on staff who are working on campus informing the University that they have received a positive NHS test result. It is not Public Health Wales data. For each day we show the new confirmed cases for that day. This does not include the number of cases from previous days and is not a cumulative total.

About our asymptomatic screening service

We know how important it is to be vigilant about the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Cardiff. We have introduced a number of extra safety measures to help minimise the risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) in our community. Essential to this strategy is our decision to offer a programme of ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) screening to all students and staff who are asymptomatic (showing no signs or symptoms of the virus).

All students and staff who are asymptomatic will have the opportunity to take a saliva test shortly after arriving on campus. Anyone who is displaying symptoms, or who receives a positive or inconclusive test result through our screening service, is advised to self-isolate, inform the University they are doing so, and asked to arrange an NHS test. Find out more about our screening service.
