What does diabetes mean to me?

To celebrate 100 years of insulin in medicine we are offering free workshops with interactive art activities, discussions and virtual science to promote awareness of what diabetes is and how it affects the people living with it.

At the workshops we will present:

• the background of what diabetes is
• what it does to the body
• how it affects the lives of people with diabetes.

We will also couple this event with virtual science experiments such as measuring sugar (glucose) from fizzy drinks and art activities.

We can work with you to find a date and time to deliver the workshop with your class.

Benefits for pupils

We would like for all participating classes to draw what they have learnt about what diabetes means to them. These drawings will then form part of our art exhibition at the Hearth Gallery, Llandough Hospital and will provide feedback to us as to how much the class learnt about diabetes.

Participants will gain awareness and understanding of what diabetes is, how type 1 diabetes is different to type 2 diabetes and how individuals with diabetes manage their daily lives.

Participants will also learn where the pancreas is located, why it is important and how it works to control glucose from our food.

Supporting the Welsh curriculum

This event will support aspects of the Welsh curriculum including:

• life sciences
• expressive arts
• health and wellbeing.
