  • CalendarAvailable on request
  • Clock outlineUp to 2 hours
  • Available in Welsh

This free teaching resource is designed for use by English, Welsh, science and PSE teachers.

The resource combines teaching about cancer research with poetry and digital literacy. The pack is aimed at key stage three (age 11-14) and aligns with the national curriculum.

The resource may also be of interest to homeschoolers and youth groups.

Please sign up on our website to receive a copy of the education pack by email.

This project delivers three key activities:

Cancer quiz

Raising awareness of cancer, this quiz asks children to consider and discuss personal attitudes and beliefs and feel comfortable and confident about contributing and communicating ideas. Revealing the answers provides factual information about cancer and helps children understand the risks posed by UV, smoking and poor diets.

The truth in a world full of misinformation

It is vital that we are all able to assess the validity of claims we find online or in the media. This activity explores techniques to analyse the information we find on blogs, social media and in the press.

Poetry activity and competition

Children are asked to imagine they are a cancer researcher and come up with a poem. We have developed two film poems with Ifor ap Glyn (National Poet of Wales) and Owen Sheers to help inspire. Winners will receive £150 book tokens for their schools and have their poem displayed publicly at a research facility to inspire scientists and patients.

Find out more about the poetry competition which closes on 30 April 2021.

All the resources are available free to download from the Wales Cancer Research Centre website.
