Airborne troops with French civilians near Ranville, 10 June 1944
Abstract

This presentation will explore how photography can be used to study relations between the British military and French civilians and operate as an archive in its own right. From 6 June 1944 and throughout the conflict, British war photographers aimed to illustrate the Liberation. One of their favourite themes was the representation of French civilians, alone or interacting with the Tommies. This talk will uncover how these shots were conceived, the context in which they were taken and their impact on military-civilian relations.

The presentation will be in French.

This event takes place as part of the School of Modern Languages History and Heritage research theme.
