In this seminar, Siwan Rosser and Rhiannon Marks will share the main findings of 'Darllen Hunaniaethau' (Reading Identities), a collaborative research project with Welsh subject teachers in secondary schools that explores the relationship between Welsh literature, equality, diversity and inclusion. In the context of Welsh education today, exploring identities is more important than ever. In the Curriculum for Wales (Government of Wales, 2021), the Four Purposes emphasise the importance of developing 'ethical, informed citizens' who are 'knowledgeable about their culture, community, society and the world, now and in the past; respect the needs and rights of others, as a member of a diverse society [...] and ready to be citizens of Wales and the world'. The aim of 'Reading Identities' is to explore the key role that creative literature can play in developing citizens who are alert to the world around them. Drawing on research in the field of Welsh literary theory and criticism, we will discuss how literary texts can be used to open up new discussions around identities in the classroom. 'Darllen Hunaniaethau' is funded by the AHRC.
