Medieval drawing of spies

The notion of little birds, as in ‘a little bird told me’, is well known and implies the obtaining of secret information and/or that the source of that information is secret.

More recently, the notion of little birds has turned into a household concept through Game of Thrones where they are the members of a network of spies and informants in the service of Lord Varys, the Master of Whisperers.

In fact, the little birds do exist in the medieval evidence, and this talk will introduce some of the fascinating material that enables us to study spies and espionage in the Middle Ages.
