Speaker: Dr Eva Marquis (Camborne School of Mines, Exeter University)

Our public lectures are free events that attract a diverse audience including the public, secondary school pupils and professionals. The series aims to open up areas of interest in the Earth and environmental sciences and present new research in this area to the public.

Sustainability - what next?

What do we want the world to look like in 2030, and how do we achieve this? In 2015, UN Member States agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint for tackling many of the challenges affecting communities around the world. Meeting these goals requires engagement, including by those involved in the Earth and environmental sciences. In this series, experts from a variety of disciplines examine the concept of ‘sustainable development’ and explore its implications on the use of diverse natural resources.

Abstract

A sustainable low carbon future will be metal intensive. As a global society, we are using a greater volume and range of metals than ever before in our history. With the need for a green industrial revolution and the delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the demand for these metals is continuing to increase. The resource demands required to enable this change are becoming increasingly large and varied. Although there is contention and uncertainty on how large-scale demand increases on minerals will impact the reserve base and raw material supply in the mid-to-long-term, the general point still stands – as these metals are being used to further the SDGs, then production of these metals should also be done in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner. This talk will outline some of the challenges associated with supplying metals to enable the SDGs and discuss some of the initiatives being undertaken to address these challenges.
