Not just clumsy: understanding Developmental Coordination Disorder

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) or Dyspraxia, is a common and lifelong motor disorder. DCD affects day to day life, school achievements, relationships, and employment; often leading to high anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor fitness. Children with the condition often struggle to learn and perform motor tasks. Despite affecting around 5% of children, little is known about the cause of the condition.

Cardiff University researchers Dr Catherine Purcell and Dr Jennifer Keating are investigating why children with DCD find learning motor tasks so difficult. Their research aims to help clinicians and teachers support children with DCD to learn and refine everyday motor activities, improving their quality of life.
