A reading group event organised by the Translation Studies team at the School of Modern Languages. The recently published article by Michela Baldo, Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Birmingham, will be the subject of discussion and she has kindly agreed to participate in the meeting and answer questions. This event is organised by Marie Curie Research Fellows Angela Tarantini and Joanna Chojnicka who have recently joined the School.

Michela Baldo's article titled “Translating Spanish Transfeminist Activism into Italian. Performativity, DIY, and Affective Contaminations” examines the translations into Italian of four post-porn and transfeminist Spanish texts carried out by a group of Italian transfeminist translators. The presentations of these translations between 2014 and 2017 have helped to enhance the Italian debate on post-porn and on issues such as slut-shaming, prostitution rights, and male violence against women. The concepts discussed in this article are performativity, DIY translation, and contamination.

Although focussed on a specific case study, this article contributes to the broader debate on activism in translation and is therefore relevant not only to our specific research projects, but potentially to anyone working in Translation Studies.
