Traditional Chinese dwellings known as Tulou, typical of Fujian Province

Perhaps you've never considered it, but the way we build our homes and the way they function reflects a lot about the culture we grow up in. Join us for this evening lecture as we explore the history and meaning of Chinese architecture and how it impacts on daily life.

This interactive session will cover four key topics, with plenty of time for reflection and discussion:

1. Introduction: the geography of different regions of China and the architectural features of different ethnic groups.

2. Philosophical thinking in traditional Chinese architecture: Confucianism and Taoism.

3. Building structure: anti-seismic component (dougong).

4. Traditional houses in various regions: Beijing courtyard houses, Hui-style residences, and Tulous.

This event will be held online via Zoom. We will email you details of how to join the day before.
