in conversation jenny nelson

An in-conversation virtual event with Dr Jenny Nelson (Cardiff University), Dr Jesús Sanjurjo (Cardiff University), Dr Charlotte Hammond (Cardiff University) under the History and Heritage research theme at the School of Modern Languages.

This informal conversation between Jenny Nelson (Lecturer in Portuguese and Lusophone Studies), Jesús Sanjurjo (Lecturer in Hispanic and Latin American Studies) and Charlotte Hammond (Lecturer in French Studies) will be a forum to discuss recent research and publications on the transatlantic slave trade, colonial slavery and its legacies.

They will reflect upon how their research has informed a new undergraduate module they are teaching this year that addresses slavery and abolitionism from a comparative transnational perspective. They will also discuss plans for the new international Anti-slavery Arts and Heritage network established in the School in early 2020.

Speakers

Dr Jenny Nelson is a Lecturer in Portuguese and Lusophone Studies at Cardiff University. She works on the comparative study of slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean. Her research also encompasses broader Atlantic histories and British involvement in anti-slavery activity, principally in Brazil and Cuba.

Dr Jesús Sanjurjo is a Lecturer in Hispanic and Latin American Studies as part of Cardiff University’s flagship new scheme, Darlithwyr Disglair. He specialises in the history of slavery and the slave trade in the Spanish Caribbean and Anglo-Spanish diplomatic and cultural relations during the nineteenth century. He currently co-directs the Research network 'Blood & Radical Politics' with the poet and conceptual artist RJ Arkhipov.

Dr Charlotte Hammond is a Lecturer in French Studies at Cardiff University. Her first book Entangled Otherness: Cross-Gender Fabrications in the Francophone Caribbean, published with Liverpool University Press in 2018, explores the dynamics of cross-dressing and gender performance in contemporary Francophone Caribbean cultures. She is currently working on a Leverhulme-funded project that examines how women garment and textile workers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic navigate and resist global economic structures and exploitative labour conditions through arts-based practices and community organisation.
