Witch charm

Approximately thirty-five people were accused of criminal witchcraft in Wales. However, far more people were accused in public by their neighbours. By reading these slander cases alongside misdemeanour andmaleficiumcases we can nuance our understandings of the genders of accused witches, their alleged crimes, and the role of the English legal system in shaping the outcomes of these accusations.

Lizzie Howard is completing her PhD at Cardiff University. She now works as an assistant editor for an academic publisher.
