Development of new technologies for the production of high efficiency electrical steels.
The School of Engineering's relationship with Cogent Power began over ten years ago, based on the development of new electrical steels. The alliance has evolved from an original programme of measurement and characterisation to support the development of new materials, processes and products.
Electrical steels perform a crucial role in the soft magnetic cores of electricity generators, transformers and motors in many applications. With government and businesses seeking to reduce the environmental impact of fossil fuels, the technology has a key role to play in a cleaner, greener world.
Together, the partners are working on projects with real industry application, including the reduction of transformer noise and the manufacture of high-efficiency motor-generators for electric and hybrid vehicles, in collaboration with innovative customers.
As a result of the partnership, the lead academics have built an international reputation through a portfolio of high quality published research and PhD projects. Additionally, Cogent has supported more than a dozen School of Engineering undergraduate projects and industry placement years across industrial research in electrical steels.
Wider collaborative ideas have been formulated, including a joint doctoral training centre for electrical steels, which Cogent hope to create in the next two to three years.
The success of the relationship was recognised with the Innovation Partnership Award at the 2017 Cardiff University Innovation and Impact Awards.
