Engineering innovation

Reid Lifting won the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation 2013, for an innovative product created as a result of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with us.

Enhancing design capability

A KTP partnership between Reid Lifting and our School of Engineering has helped the company win two Queen's Awards - for Innovation and International Trade. They are one of only three companies in the UK to receive a double award.

The KTP facilitated the provision of academic knowledge to help embed internal expertise for engineering design and new product development. It resulted in the design of an innovative foldable lifting structure, the Porta-Gantry Rapide, for use in rescue lifting systems and materials lifting.

The product has been receiving very positive results both in the UK and internationally and was the basis of the Innovation Awards along with the Reid Lifting's flagship gantry – the Porta-Gantry 5000. The Porta-Gantry Rapide, with its patented features and success in international markets, builds on Reid's innovative product portfolio and has helped the company increase turnover by 25% and exports to 55% of total sales.

The KTP has enabled the development of existing design skills within the company, whilst leading to the recruitment of staff and outsourcing of work to local business.

The KTP with Cardiff has been a great success for us as we have had access to academic expertise, excellent test facilities, young engineering talent and most importantly developed a strong relationship with the University. The key outcomes for the company have been improved design capability, a highly innovative new product and a high-calibre new recruit with great potential.

Company growth

The KTP Associate on the project, Peter Italiano, was pivotol to the the project's success and designed the successful product that was acknowledged by Her Majesty The Queen. The range of activities and responsibility taken on by Peter and the expertise gained was significantly beyond Reid Lifting's original expectation. Since the project's completion, Peter has accepted a role at the company, to work on further product development projects.

KTP has given me a thorough introduction into a design engineering position, where I have been able to make an early contribution to REID’s new product portfolio.

Following the first KTP, the company has completed another KTP project, with academics from the Business School. This project enabled the company to optimise their business systems to be able to support their continued growth and facilitate new service-based revenue streams.

The company's growth is going from strength to strength, with a recent announcement of Welsh Government support to invest in a new factory, which will enable REID Lifting to expand into larger purpose designed premises providing greater capacity for both its current requirements and future growth.
