Case studies

Take a look at some of our Vertical Studio projects from 2020.

Make yourself at home

This studio was a collaboration between local artist Chris Williams, Mhairi McVicar (The Welsh School of Architecture and Academic Lead of Community Gateway), and the Grange Pavilion. Working in small groups, the students designed and made prototypes for a moveable storage unit, a foldable/stackable chair and a table for the Grange Pavilion; a community-owned building opening in 2020.

Students on the unit ‘Futuremakers’ worked with Alessandro Columbano, Senior Lecturer at Birmingham School of Architecture and Design and Anna Parker from Intervention Architecture to create a series of usable and connecting play-kits or large-scale toy structures that allow for users of all ages to assemble an interconnected environment; a playscape for the public.

Access and inclusion

In this unit, students explored the needs of performers with physical and/or learning disabilities and how these performers relate to performance spaces. Their investigations were based on a live brief with inclusive community drama group Hijinx Theatre
