Case studies

Take a look at some of our Vertical Studio projects from previous years.

Student building structure

Pop-up Creative Cardiff

For this studio, students teamed up with Creative Cardiff, a network which connects people working in any creative organisation, business or job in the Cardiff region, and whose long-term ambition is to develop a creative hub for Cardiff. Students created a temporary and flexible hub for Creative Cardiff in the iconic Viriamu Jones Gallery, Main Building, Cardiff University, where they were able to run several events throughout one week, each with a different design theme.

Lost and Found

The aim of the Lost and Found studio was for students to collect/forage a complete 'set’ of construction materials, and use these to design and erect a small, safe and useful shelter on an urban site in Canton, Cardiff.

Pop-up Vernacular

In the Pop-up Vernacular studio, students explored ways in which low cost ‘systems’ could provide better homes for refugee or migrant populations, while ensuring sufficient flexibility to embrace local climate, materials, skills or cultural reference. The aim was to provide concepts for much-needed refugee housing that has real long term value.
