Ricardo Calil has been with Cardiff University for more than 18 years. He currently works as an Information Professional in the Library Service. In August 2019, he was elected to the University Council to serve a three-year term of office.
Ricardo joined Cardiff University in 2002. He has worked in different departments within the University and in 2014, following a reorganisation of Professional Services, he moved from the Information Services Directorate to the Library Service.
Between 2008 and 2016, he was a member of the University Court. In 2010, he was elected to Council for the first time, and also served on the Human Resources Committee in 2010-11, and on the Equality and Diversity Committee from 2010 to 2013. Over the years, he has gained considerable experience and expertise in university governance.
For three years, from 2013 to 2016, Ricardo chaired 'Global Diversity', a staff equality network. He has also been an assessment panellist for Athena Swan and the Race Equality Charter Mark, two equality recognition schemes which are run by Advance HE.
Originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, he studied Law at Universidade de Sao Paulo. He also holds degrees in English Language and Literature and in Applied Linguistics from Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Sao Paulo. He has worked in both the state and the private sector and has spent most of his professional life in higher education, first as a lecturer in Linguistics and Education before moving to IT and then on to the Library Service.
