Nicola Richards was born in Swansea and attended Gowerton Comprehensive School. She studied law at St John’s College, Cambridge and was admitted as a solicitor in 1988.
Nicola has worked for Macfarlanes LLP since 1986 (as a partner from 1997), retiring from the partnership in 2015.
Macfarlanes is an international law firm in the City of London. Nicola specialised in mergers and acquisitions work, leading large teams of lawyers and other professionals both in the UK and overseas in the delivery of complex, high-value cross-border transactions. She is now responsible for diversity and inclusion at the firm and remains involved with the firm’s graduate recruitment.
In 2011 she was recognised in The Lawyer’s Annual Awards for her work on gender and diversity equality.
Nicola is a member of the advisory board of Smartcells plc (a commercial stem cell storage company), and is on the committee of the 30% Club that seeks to increase the representation of women at the highest levels within professional services firms.
Nicola was appointed to Council on 29 February 2016.
