Karen Harvey-Cooke came to the University in 2003 as a Staff Development Officer, having worked at Cardiff University Students’ Union and studied at the University of Wales College Cardiff.
In 2004 Karen became an Organisational and Staff Development Manager. In her current role she is responsible for employee engagement and equality, diversity, and inclusion for staff across the University.
Karen has also been the Chair of the staff and postgraduate LGBT+ network Enfys for several years. She has been a key part of the work that the University has engaged with around sexual orientation and gender identity including the University being the highest placed higher education institution in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index for the past five years. She is a co-chair of the LGBT+ Working Group that brings together student LGBT+ Officers and staff from student facing departments to ensure that we support our LGBT+ student community in the best way possible. In 2018 she was awarded Lesbian Role Model of the Year by Stonewall Cymru and in 2020 Enfys were named Employee Network Group of the Year by Stonewall and Stonewall Cymru.
Outside of work Karen is a trustee for Skills and Volunteering Cymru, an independent volunteer-led charity based in Cardiff with projects supporting the homeless, children and young people, those with disabilities, the environment and the police and NHS.
