Working with schools
The School of Welsh has been seizing the opportunity to work closely with both Welsh medium and English medium schools, promoting the benefits of studying Welsh at Cardiff.
On 8 February, the School of Welsh was invited to take part in the annual ‘Welsh in Business’ conference at Fitzalan High School, Cardiff. Gwennan Higham, a research student at the School of Welsh, along with representatives from other bodies and companies gathered in the main hall to inform Year 9 pupils of the importance of the Welsh language in the workplace. It was an opportunity for pupils to witness, at first hand, careers in which the Welsh language is used before choosing their GCSE subjects. More than 100 pupils attended the conference. They were informed of the wide range of career options available to those with a degree in Welsh.
On 12 February a series of workshops were held by School of Welsh staff at Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli. The aim of the sessions was to focus on subjects featured on the Welsh Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level syllabus. Students from Ysgol y Preseli and Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi joined Ysgol y Strade students in the workshops. The day was a resounding success with Ysgol y Strade’s Welsh Department tweeting at the end of the day:
