Comparing the situation in Wales and the Basque Country

We welcome Dr Julia Barnes to the School of Welsh for a period of six months. She hails from Cardiff originally but has been living in the Basque country for 26 years where she works in the Education Department of a Basque medium faculty at the University of Mondragón.
Dr Barnes will join the School of Welsh’s Language, Policy and Planning Research Unit and will collaborate with Professor Colin Williams by researching into language policy in both countries. She will compare the training given to teachers to teach through the medium of Welsh and Basque respectively.
Dr Barnes is looking forward to exploring the similarities and differences between the situation in both countries. She also hopes to use her research to help trainee teachers in the Basque country, and aims to find placements from them in the Cardiff area.
