Student reaches ‘Cân i Gymru 2010’ final
Megan Williams, a first year student at the School of Welsh, has reached the final of this year’s ‘Cân i Gymru’ (Song for Wales) competition. Her song will go head to head with seven other songs for the £10,000 prize and the title ‘Cân i Gymru 2010’.
1. What is the name of the song?
Gwên ar fy wyneb – A smile on my face
2. Did you compose both the lyrics and the melody?
3. What is the song about?
The song is about how certain songs remind you of a special person or time in your life and the way music can evoke past relationships with lovers, family and friends.
4. How long have you been composing?
I’ve been composing for about a year. I composed this song last year for my A Level Music portfolio. This song was my favourite of all the ones in the portfolio so I decided to enter it into the ‘Cân i Gymru’ competition.
5. What would you do with the money if you won?
I would buy a new piano because Dad has thrown the old one out. But I’m not daring to think about winning at the moment!
6. Are you looking forward to the final?
Yes, I’m looking forward to it but I’m very nervous! I’m not very good at speaking on television!
7. What are your plans for the future?
I’m going to see how things go. I enjoy writing and composing and being creative. A competition like this gives you credibility.
Megan’s song will be performed in the final of the ‘Cân i Gymru’ competition at the Venue, Llandudno on Sunday 28th February 2010. The competition will be shown live on S4C where viewers will be able to vote for their favourite song.
