Single Honours

BA Single Honours in Welsh

Students in the School's grounds

Year One

During the first year, we offer both language and literature modules which provide a sound basis for a degree in Welsh. There are two routes in Year One, one for first-language students and the other for second-language students.

First-language route

Students may study up to 80 credits in Welsh. The following four modules are offered (the first three are compulsory):

All modules are taught through the medium of Welsh.

In addition, students will take credits in another subject or subjects, up to 120 credits total. We offer a wide range of subjects, e.g. Education, Modern Languages, Archaeology, Music, Religious Studies, English, Philosophy, Sociology, Politics, History, Mathematics, Geography, and Journalism. Some students choose to continue with the subjects they studied for A level, while others choose to venture into new areas.

Second-language route

Normally, students who have studied A level Welsh (second language) follow this route. However, we consider the student’s linguistic skills, both oral and written, before coming to a final decision on which route a student will follow.

Students must study 80 credits in Welsh:

Year 2 and Final Year

The School of Welsh is proud of the range of modules available to students in Year 2 and Final year. To ensure that students have a firm grasp of the Welsh language, we have some compulsory modules, which focus on linguistic and communication skills, both oral and written. We also provide a series of core modules, to ensure that students have an overview of the development of the Welsh language and its literature across the centuries. In addition, we offer a wide range of optional modules so that students are able to specialise in fields that are of particular interest to them. For example, students can opt for literature modules, either medieval and/or modern, or linguistic modules, or a combination of modules across these areas. The overall aim of the School is to offer students a degree scheme which is not only of the highest academic quality but which is also relevant to the needs of modern-day Wales.
