Year One
During the first year, we offer both language and literature modules which provide a sound basis for a degree in Welsh. There are two routes in Year One, one for first-language students and the other for second-language students.
First-language route
Students will study 120 credits in all. You may study up to 80 credits in Welsh. The following four modules are offered (the first three are compulsory):
- CY1743 Llenyddiaeth Gymraeg [Welsh Literature]
- CY1742 Cyflwyniad i'r Gymraeg [Introduction to Welsh]
- CY1744 O Destun i Draethawd [From Title to Essay]
- CY1745 Cymru a'i Diwylliant [Wales and its Culture]
All modules are taught through the medium of Welsh.
In addition, students will take either 40 or 60 credits in the second subject of their degree scheme.
Second-language route
Normally, students who have studied A level Welsh (second language) follow this route. However, we consider the student’s linguistic skills, both oral and written, before coming to a final decision on which route a student will follow.
Students must study 80 credits in Welsh:
- CY1495 Sgiliau Cyfathrebu [Communication Skills]
- CY1699 Gloywi Iaith [Improving Language Skills]
- CY1081 Hanes Llenyddiaeth Gymraeg [History of Welsh Literature]
- CY1584 Llenyddiaeth Gymraeg Fodern [Modern Welsh Literature]
All modules are taught through the medium of Welsh.
Students will also study 40 credits in the second subject of their degree scheme.
Year 2 and Final Year
The School of Welsh is proud of the range of modules available to students in Year 2 and Final Year. To ensure that students have a firm grasp of the Welsh language, we have some compulsory modules, which focus on linguistic and communication skills, both oral and written.
In addition, we offer a wide range of optional modules so that students are able to specialise in fields that are of particular interest to them. For example, students can opt for literature modules, either medieval and/or modern, or linguistic modules, or a combination of modules across these areas. The overall aim of the School is to offer students a degree scheme which is not only of the highest academic quality but which is also relevant to the needs of modern-day Wales.
