Professor Peter Wynn Thomas

Professor Thomas is an authority on the Welsh language from its earliest periods to the present day. He is the author of the standard grammar of the language, Gramadeg y Gymraeg (University of Wales Press, 1996). This work was awarded the prestigious Legonna Celtic Research Prize, which is organised by the National Library of Wales.
Other books are Cymraeg Graenus (1998) and Peredur: Golygiad Lleiafol (2000), a study of one of the tales of the Mabinogion, which was awarded the Vernam Hull Prize in 2001. He is co-author of Cymraeg, Cymrâg, Cymrêg…: Cyflwyno’r Tafodieithoedd and co-editor of Canhwyll Marchogyon: Cyd-destunoli Peredur (2000) and Developing Minority Languages (2000), and has written a number of pioneering academic papers on the development of Welsh and its dialects. He has also edited the language and literature section of Studia Celtica: The Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies. His contribution to the study of Welsh was acknowledged in 2003, when he was made an honorary member of the Gorsedd.
His most recent research project was An Electronic Corpus of Medieval Welsh Prose, funded by an AHRC resource enhancement grant of some £268,000. See Welsh Prose 1350-1425.
