Recruiting Students

Cardiff University is committed to widening access and welcomes applications from students of all backgrounds. The University recognises the importance of achieving a diverse and talented student community, and the benefits that this brings to our students and the University as a whole.

The University has developed a package of scholarships and bursaries to ensure that the cost of study is not a barrier to an education at Cardiff University. It also plans to pilot the use of contextual data in its admissions process for Entry 2012, with a view to a university-wide implementation for Entry 2013. From Entry 2012, UCAS will make contextual data available to universities with each application. The University intends to use this data, along with other data from independent sources, to develop its contextual admissions model. Academic and non-academic attainment will be reviewed against school performance and socio-economic background to provide admissions tutors with a more complete overview of an applicant’s attainment and potential.

The three pilot schools for Entry 2012 will be Cardiff School of Biosciences, Cardiff Law School and Cardiff School of Medicine. No other academic schools will use this data for the 2012 admissions cycle. The University will not be using contextual data to make lower or differential offers to any particular group of students. The participating schools will use the data, for example, in deciding whether or not to call a candidate to interview.
