The programme offers workshops and courses in research skills and techniques, as well as broader areas of research management and professional development.  A key feature is the provision of opportunities to explore career options, both with in and outside of higher education.

A number of topics are offered via on-line courses so are available to researchers whenever they wish to access them.  Further, several academic Schools offer postgraduate research students access to modules  at Master’s level that might benefit them in their research.

In addition to courses, the University Graduate College enables researcher development through opportunities for involvement in student-led conferences and to obtain funding for student-led interdisciplinary activities which will enhance the research environment.  Postgraduate researchers are also represented in the University Graduate College decision- making structure, so have an opportunity to influence and feedback on their development opportunities.

The University Graduate College contributes to skills development of other early career researchers by linkages with the Research Staff Career Development Skills Programme and aims eventually to provide skills development activities which span the entirety of a researcher lifecycle.  There is also funding for research staff to organise interdisciplinary activities.

This package of support for postgraduate researchers and research only staff was shortlisted in the 2010 Times Higher Education Award for “Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers”.
