Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Alcohol and Young People (IPAP)
Seminar series 2012
The prevention of alcohol misuse and smoking in young people are important and cross cutting public health challenges. A range of factors influence young people’s attitude to, and consumption of alcohol and tobacco, and interdisciplinary approaches to addressing these questions may be of significant value. Nevertheless, building links between different disciplines which study alcohol misuse, tobacco use, and their shared risk and protective factors remains challenging.
The Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Alcohol and Young People seminar series (IPAP) aims to bring researchers from across Cardiff University (and beyond!) who are engaged in work on alcohol and tobacco use by young people, and key risk and protective factors. It will address four major issues, all of which can be better understood through interdisciplinary dialogue:
- environmental, familial and genetic factors which influence and pre-dispose young people to engage in alcohol and tobacco use;
- the effectiveness of interventions to prevent alcohol and tobacco use;
- the importance of different settings for intervention delivery; and
- key methodological challenges in the development and evaluation of interventions.
IPAP is funded by the Cardiff University Graduate College’s Interdisciplinary Activities Fund for Research Staff. The seminar series is being organised by three researchers from Cardiff University – James White (DECIPHer Centre, School of Medicine), Jennifer Ware (School of Psychology) and Jeremy Segrott (DECIPHer, School of Social Sciences), whose centres/schools are supporting the initiative.
Attendance at the seminars is free, but to assist with room booking we ask that you register in advance by emailing Jeremy Segrott (segrottj@cardiff.ac.uk). Tea and coffee will be available at all of the seminars.
