Human Face Perception and Animation (HuFPA) Network

There are various researchers at different schools across university that are involved in studying Human Face Perception and Animation. Unfortunately, researchers across the university are unaware or know little of each other’s work and expertise in this area. Therefore, HuFPA organises a series of networking meetings in order to bring researchers in this area from different Schools together and to discuss and share their expertise and opinions.

In the past few years, Computer Vision researchers, especially those involved in face animation and perception, have increasingly turned to techniques used in Psychology to aid in the development, analysis and evaluation of Computer Vision methods. Conversely, Psychologists in this area are using computer vision techniques to generate stimuli for experiments and to analyse real-life human (facial) behaviour, as it allows Psychologists to simulate and study human behaviour in a carefully controlled manner.

The aim of the HuFPA network is to provide a platform to bring together researchers interested in this area. We aim for five or six such meetings, where each meeting would be approximately 1 to 2 hours.

The meetings will be used to provide an overview of both areas and to discuss topics that bridge Computer Science and Psychology. In addition, we will also invite researchers to give a seminar on a subject within this area that could be used as basis for discussion. We encourage people from inside Cardiff University to give seminars and we will also invite two speakers from outside Cardiff University, one each from the areas of Computer Vision and Psychology.

The next meeting will be held on Friday 2nd March 2012, 12.00-14.00 hrs.
Location: T/12.10 (12th floor) of the Tower Building, Park Place.

We are delighted to have Douglas Cunningham, from the Max Planck institute, to give a presentation. This will be followed by a discussion about how we can follow-up our network.

As always, lunch and refreshments will be provided. We would therefore appreciate it if you could let us know if you would like to attend. Please contact Job van der Schalk: vanderschalkj@cardiff.ac.uk
