Data mining at the South Galactic Pole
Deep surveys of the universe now routinely collect data for hundreds of millions of galaxies in multiple photometric bands.
Most of the techniques that have been developed for handling this data, such as methods for estimating redshifts from the photometry, have been developed from fairly small datasets. The student would develop new techniques for extracting useful information for such large datasets, including techniques for spotting new classes of rare objects.
