Supporting Fairtrade Fortnight

7 March 2012

Fairtrade Fortnight 2012

The University and Students’ Union is celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight with a range of special promotions and offers.

Running from 27 February to 11 March 2012, the theme for this year’s event is ‘Take a Step’.

The Fairtrade Foundation is encouraging staff and students to get involved by taking their own ‘steps’ for Fairtrade every day, every week or every month throughout 2012.

These steps include wearing Fairtrade clothing or buying fair-trade produce. In total, the Foundation is hoping the public will take 1.5 million steps for Fairtrade in 2012 - one for every producer they aim to work with around the world.

Throughout the fortnight, the Students’ Union will be hosting Fairtrade stalls throughout the fortnight, in the main Union building and the IV Lounge on the Heath Park campus, promoting Fairtrade awareness and produce.  Discounts on Fairtrade clothing will be available in the Union shop and there will also be promotions on Fairtrade drinks in Union outlets.

Campus Services Division will be running offers on a variety of Fairtrade products in coffee shops, including a special £1.50 deal for a hot drink and Fairtrade flapjack or muffin. There will also be opportunities to sample Fairtrade products at tasting stands in Humanities coffee shop (Cadbury’s – 6 March) and the Tower/Biosciences coffee shops (homemade cakes – 7 March).

Schools and Divisions are invited to get involved and organise their own events to promote the Fortnight. For example, Information Services will be holding a variety of competitions for its staff, as well as holding a cake stall to raise funds for Tradecraft.

The Fairtrade Foundation’s website offers resources and inspiration for anyone wishing to get involved. To watch the campaign film for Take a Step for Fairtrade, click here.
