Members of staff who have given a combined 1,013 years of service to the University were celebrated at this year’s Recognition of Service awards (Friday 25th November).
38 awardees were recognised this year, 33 of whom had achieved 25 years service and 3 of whom had achieved 40 years service, as well as 2 members of staff who had achieved 36 years and 32 years service respectively.
The staff members were congratulated and thanked for their contribution by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Elizabeth Treasure, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff & Diversity, Professor Terry Threadgold, and Director of Human Resources, Safety, Health & Environment Directorate, Jayne Dowden.
Staff from 14 academic schools and three different directorates were presented with certificates and a gift of their choice – either a Waterford Crystal gift, a £150 John Lewis gift card, £150 of charity vouchers, or a combination of John Lewis and charity vouchers.
Claudia Blakytny, School of Dentistry, was one of those marking 25 years of service, alongside her colleagues, Professor Barbara Chadwick, Victoria Ocock and Professor Michael Lewis.
Looking back at her time at the University, Claudia said: “The best thing about Cardiff is the friendliness. I’ve made so many friends for life here, despite coming to Wales from Leeds and not knowing a soul. I have a very enjoyable job because it’s so varied – no two days are the same and I love treating the patients just as much as teaching the students. They are the ones who keep me young.”
Prof Threadgold spoke of her appreciation to all those attending the ceremony. She said: “Their amazing commitment and loyalty has made Cardiff the world-leading institution it is today.
“The success of any university depends on the quality, hard work and commitment of its staff. We are very fortunate at Cardiff to have staff of the highest quality working in all of the diverse areas and functions which it takes to run a large university.”
