Cardiff School of Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering Centre merge

The Manufacturing Engineering Centre has become part of the Cardiff School of Engineering (August 1) in a merger that will bring together, in one integrated School, the major engineering activities within the University.

The merger will strengthen the research profile of both and will enable greater collaboration and more efficient use of facilities and expertise. It will enable a coherent and integrated research strategy for engineering and will assist in providing an enhanced teaching provision in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. It will also contribute to the School’s strategic aim of assisting the Welsh economy in the vital role of the development of high-level skills in STEM subjects and in the formation of strategic partnerships with industry.

The new Director of the School of Engineering, Professor Karen Holford, welcomed the merger as an opportunity to consolidate combined strengths and work together in order to deliver the strategic aims of the School.  Amongst these aims are the pursuit of internationally leading research addressing the current needs of industry and society; the provision of education of the highest quality at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and a continuing commitment to contributing to the needs of the local economy.

New charity registration for Cardiff University

Cardiff University become the first of a new wave of Welsh educational institutions to be registered by the Charity Commission following the implementation of the Charities Act 2006.

Universities have always been charities but previously did not have to register with the Commission as they were accountable to their funder Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). However, the Charities Act 2006 changed the way in which these charities are regulated in order to improve accountability across the whole sector.

Dr Chris Turner, Director of Registry, Governance and Students said:

“Cardiff University is pleased to have represented the HE sector in Wales in working so productively with the Charity Commission on the registration process. Whilst initially we were daunted about the prospect of being registered with the Charity Commission, we have worked closely with both its Wales Office and the Registration Division to ensure we fully understand our responsibilities as trustees and what it means to be a registered charity. We share the Commission’s view that it’s vital for the charity sector to be transparent and accountable to the public who support and benefit from it.”

Cardiff University is now registered charity no.1136855 and is required to note this charity number in all publications and on headed notepaper.
