Award recognition for Cardiff
Cardiff’s ground-breaking cancer research partnership work with China has won the International Collaboration categoryat the annual Times Higher Education awards. The University won for its collaboration with Capital Medical University in China which aims to find new approaches to detecting and treating cancer. The partnership pools the research expertise and knowledge within both institutions with the aim of making real progress in tackling a global issue – breast cancer. One of the judging panel, Paul Boyle, acting chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council and international champion at Research Councils UK said: "This project demonstrates the value that comes from bringing together international experts who can forge world-class partnerships that are sustainable."
In other award news, Cardiff News has been named the winner in the newsletters or magazines category of the 2011 Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) PR, Marketing and Communications Awards.
Judges for the ACU, which has 480 university members around the Commonwealth, said Cardiff News was cost effective, reflected the vision and mission of Cardiff University adding “it is a newspaper and not a newsletter.”
The University’s three Research Institutes were also successful in the website category, receiving an “honourable mention” for their sites. Judges said that the sites, created by the University’s Web Team, showed “wonderful design, very clean and clear navigation and good integration of social media.
Supporting international staff
The Equality Challenge Unit is undertaking a survey of international staff working in higher education across the UK. The purpose of the survey is to identify the issues that international staff members face within the sector, and the key areas where further support would be most beneficial.
The survey is for international staff who work in any role in a higher education institution in the UK and whose ‘domicile’ of origin is not the UK.
The survey responses will be anonymised and no individuals, or individual institutions, will be identified. The survey will be open until Thursday 22nd December 2011. If you are an international staff member at Cardiff University, please consider taking part at

Carols round the tree

The Vice-Chancellor’s office and the School of Music invite all staff to join them for carols around the Christmas tree in the JVJ Gallery, Main Building on Wednesday 21 December from 12:30 to 1.00pm. Sherry and mince pies will be available after the service with the compliments of the Cardiff University Chaplaincy. A collection will also be made for the Alzheimer's Society, the main charity of the University’s Social and Community Action Network.
