Professor Graham Hutchings FRS
Academia Europaea
Professor Graham Hutchings FRS, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research has become a member of Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe), an international association of experts from all disciplines who are leaders in their own subject areas.
Membership is by invite only. Nominations can only be made by existing members of the Academia, followed by a peer review process and confirmation as to the scholarship of the nominated individual.
Internationally recognised for his pioneering contributions in the use of gold for catalysis, Professor Hutchings was the first to predict and subsequently demonstrate that gold would be a highly effective catalyst for acetylene hydrochlorination, thereby helping to establish a new field of catalysis.
Professor Hutchings said: “I am honoured to have the work of my research team recognised in this way. It is a great honour for the field of catalysis as well.”

Print Centre opens
The Print Centre has now opened in the Students’ Union following a £100,000 investment that has enabled the company to split their services between their current base on Windsor Place and the University.
The new Centre offers a full colour print and bindery service for both staff and students and also provides a ‘while you wait’ instant print facility.
The Centre is located on the ground floor of the Student’s Union near Blackwell’s bookshop and can be contacted via email at union@printcentrecardiff.com or on 02920 233225.

Sustainability Week
From 8 – 12 November, the University is holding its second Sustainability Week.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Sustainability Week, a new programme of special events has been put together, and new initiatives introduced, aimed at encouraging as many staff as possible to get involved.
This year’s highlights include the Sustainability Debate on Thursday 11th November which promises to be another lively Question Time-style event with students, academics and Wales’ Minister for Environment, Sustainability & Housing Jane Davidson AM debating whether the current economic climate will jeopardise principles of sustainability.
Other key events during the week include a special SciScreen event showing the hit film The Garden and followed by a debate; a special film screening of the Age of Stupid; the chance to have your bike serviced for free; a fruit and veg stall in the Main Building and much more.
Again this year, staff and students can:
- Post a Pledge to make at least one change, large or small in their daily routines to live or work more sustainably.
- Send in a Sustainable Idea of a workable and cost-effective way the University could become more sustainable.
- Get involved with the Bring Your Jumper to work initiative.
The Week offers the chance for staff to help celebrate achievements in driving the sustainability agenda in Schools and Directorates, as well as successes in advancing research and teaching in sustainable development. It will be an opportunity for the University community to get involved and work together to support the University’s ambition of becoming a more sustainable University.
