New senior appointments
24 August 2010

Professor Elizabeth Treasure
Professor Elizabeth Treasure, the former Dean of the School of Dentistry, has become the first woman Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University’s history.
Her appointment is one of a number at senior level recently announced by the University. Professor Treasure succeeds Professor Peter Blood who has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor since 2007.
During her tenure as Dean of the School of Dentistry, Professor Treasure led a major restructuring of the School and developed the curriculum, leading to the provision of an MSc in Conscious Sedation which is now training clinicians in a skill known to be in short supply. She also took forward the Modernising Dental Education programme by establishing close working between NHS and University staff, improving patient care and student experience.
Professor Treasure said: “I am very much looking forward to my new role in the University and working to meet the demands ahead in the future. The University has a clear strategy going forward which will help it achieve its aims and I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to help drive this forward.”
Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant, said: “I welcome Professor Treasure’s appointment at Deputy Vice-Chancellor. She brings with her inspirational leadership which the University will benefit from, particularly as we move forward with a number of important strategic developments across the University.”
Other changes effective from 1 August 2010 at Pro Vice-Chancellor level include Professor Hywel Thomas who becomes Pro Vice-Chancellor for Engagement & International (Professor Thomas steps down as Head of the School of Engineering and succeeds Professor Ken Woodhouse) and Professor Graham Hutchings as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, succeeding Professor Teresa Rees.
Professor Terry Threadgold remains as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff and Diversity, and Professor Jonathon Osmond continues as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students. Professor Malcolm Jones continues as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Health & Estates into the next academic Session, with Professor Tim Wess, Head of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, taking over as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Estates from 1 October. Professor Treasure will take oversight of the health portfolio from 1 December.
The Pro Vice-Chancellors will be supported in their roles by a small number of deputies – Professor Stephen Denyer on Education & Students, Professor Sheila Hunt for Staff & Diversity and, for research, Professor Justin Lewis, Professor Chris McGuigan and Professor Mike Owen.
Dr David Grant said: “I would like to thank all those members of the senior team who are stepping down for all their hard work and commitment to the University during their tenures, and to welcome all new members. They each join at an exciting time in the University’s development, but equally during challenging times for the higher education sector as a whole.”
