New Heads of Schools
21 January 2010

Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS
One of the world’s leading physiologists renowned for his outstanding achievements in biological sciences has been appointed as the new Director of the School of Biosciences.
Ole Petersen, who is a Medical Research Council (MRC) Professor, will join the School in February together with several members of his MRC-supported team. Professor Petersen has previously worked at the Universities of Liverpool and Dundee, where he led groups working on cellular calcium signalling mechanisms.
Professor Petersen has a distinguished research career to date and is recognised globally for discovering highly localized signalling events controlling secretion as well as intracellular tunnels allowing quick passage of calcium across cells. Last year he and his group discovered the signalling mechanisms inside cells responsible for the toxic action of alcohol.
He has received many accolades and notably was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2000. He is also an Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences as well as the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He received the Purkyne Medal from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in 2003 and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for ‘Services to Science’ in 2008.
