National Student Survey 2011

22 March 2011

The University is pushing for a high response rate to this year’s National Student Survey (NSS) – and is looking for staff to help.

The NSS is published annually, asking final year students studying at every UK university to rate their education. Students rate their teaching, assessment, academic support, organisation, learning resources, personal development and overall satisfaction. The results are published nationally each August.

The Survey forms an important part of the University’s educational planning, allowing it to identify areas where further action is needed. Last year, Cardiff achieved its highest-ever response rate of 66 per cent. This year we want to do better still.

Cardiff students have already been sent an invitation email to complete the NSS and are starting to respond. We would like staff to help by making your students aware of the survey and encouraging them to complete the survey online at www.thestudentsurvey.com. You can do this at the start of lectures or tutorials – anywhere that you have contact with your students. Posters and other marketing materials have been distributed to  Schools to help you publicise the survey, and the Students’ Union are on hand to assist with lecture shouts and engaging with your students.

Students

When promoting the survey, please make sure that your students:

  • feel free to give their honest feedback on what they liked and did not like about their course
  • are not asked to fill in the survey while a member of staff is overseeing their responses or made to feel that their responses are being monitored

If you have any questions or wish to utilise the Students’ Union’s involvement please contact Martin Jones in Registry on JonesM5@cardiff.ac.uk or on 79284. If your students have questions please direct them to www.thestudentsurvey.com or they can contact the National Student Survey team at Ipsos MORI directly at thestudentsurvey@ipsos.com.

Professor Jonathan Osmond, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education and Students, said: “The National Student Survey is a crucial measure of our students’ responses to the education we provide at Cardiff University. It helps us to confirm our strengths, and to target our efforts where there is weakness. Much of the work we have done on student assessment and feedback in recent years has been in response to NSS results. We need high response rates to get meaningful data, and I hope that all colleagues will do everything they can to encourage their students to take part.”

The Survey closes at the end of April 2011.
