Giant talking human models, flower pots of organs, legacies of Roman days gone by and tales of Wales during the Great War are just some of many events organised by staff and students for this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Between 31 July to 7 August the University will be staging its largest ever presence on the Maes in Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys, with at least 28 separate events throughout the week-long festival.

Located next to the Science and Technology Pavilion the University’s Pavilion will be alive with new exhibits, activities, talks, exhibitions and more and involve even more academic schools and staff this year.

Once again the University has teamed with its strategic partner Techniquest to bring a fun approach to science to the Maes. Alongside some of the favourite University-inspired interactive displays, a new hands-on exhibit will be unveiled demonstrating how sonar technology can be used by archaeologists, geologists and engineers to find out what’s hidden under ground and other unusual places.

To mark the 1,600th anniversary of the Roman’s departure from Britain in 410 AD, and as a lead partner in this year’s AD 410 ‘Roman’s Go Home’ events, the University’s Pavilion will be inspired by all things Roman.

Other highlights of the week include on Monday (2 August, 3pm) Professor Arwyn Jones who will be delivering one of the daily Science Lectures – Tissue Engineering – an introduction to the main exhibition - in the Science Lecture Theatre.

The launch of a new project to find treasures of World War 1 by Dr Gethin Matthews from the School of History, Archaeology and Region on Tuesday (3 August, 11am); the School of Welsh Reunion on Thursday (5 August, 1pm); a lecture by Professor Sioned Davies, Head of the School of Welsh on the world-famous Mabinogion at 4pm.
