Ethical management, leading change and communicating effectively are just some of the skills members of staff have developed and refined thanks to two training programmes run by the University.

Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant congratulated 27 staff from academic Schools and administrative divisions on completing the demanding programmes - Practical Leadership for University Management; and Leading and Managing Teams which aim to enhance participants’ leadership and management skills.

At the annual celebratory event held at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Dr Grant presented 11 members of staff with Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) certificates for completing Practical Leadership for University Management and 16 people with ILM certificates for completing Leading and Managing Teams. They were joined at the event by a host of people who had supported their learning including course tutors, external contributors, line managers and mentors.

Speaking about the Practical Leadership for University Management programme Professor Claire Gorrara, one of the participants, said: “The course was extremely productive. I found that I learnt much from the academic work and how to support and promote best practice in management terms. I also came to recognise and understand more about my own management and leadership styles and how best to develop my own strengths and address areas where I was less confident.”

Sarah Woods of the University’s Planning Division took part in the Leading and Managing Teams Programme. “This is a fantastic course for those who are currently leading and managing teams or those who wish to learn the skills in anticipation for the future,” said Sarah. “It’s highly interactive with a great tutor- I would recommend it to all regardless of level or position.”

The University is committed to developing its leadership culture through a range of internally delivered leadership and management development programmes. These aim to encourage and sustain a positive working environment for all staff. The award ceremony celebrates that a wide range of people, both academic and support staff from all levels of the University, have not only been trained, but have achieved awards that are recognised by the ILM.
