Home for the holidays?
14 December 2010

Will you be spending the holidays at home this year? Could you offer an invitation to an international student to share Christmas with you?
There are always some students left on the campus or in their hall of residence, unable to return home, with no plans to go anywhere else, and possibly unaware of the extent to which the University will be empty and closed over the festive period.
HOST is a national organisation which arranges home stays for one to three days over Christmas for international students from Cardiff and many other universities.
HOST is always looking for more invitations. If you think you would enjoy adding an international element to your Christmas, and helping someone far from home to feel more involved in the life of the UK, please take a look at www.hostuk.org or call HOST on 020 7739 6292.

Holiday travel
Travelling home for the holidays? Taking the train or driving alone can be very expensive – save money and make the trip more fun with the Cardiff University Liftshare Scheme.
The Scheme is free to all staff and students and enables you to register your daily or one-off journey preferences; including whether you would rather share with a male, female, smoker, non-smoker, which days of the week you are prepared to share, whether you are looking for a lift, or offering a lift, and most importantly your journey details.
Once you register, the system will search for other registered users in the University who are making a similar journey. It will even formulate an introductory email to help you make first contact. There are also a series of Frequently Asked Questions and some hints on how and where to safely make contact with a possible car share partner.
Car sharing is an integral part of the University’s Travel Plan, which launched its first phase in May this year. The overall aim of the Plan is to encourage more sustainable travel and to reduce the University’s carbon footprint. It is one of the many steps being taken in addressing the institutions’ environmental impact.
If you are unsuccessful in finding a suitable car share partner within the Cardiff University private group, you can elect to search for a partner from further afield, such as the South East Wales Transport Alliance (SEWTA). Liftshare is an active network operating across the United Kingdom.
