The Dean of the School of Medicine is undertaking a marathon effort to raise money to help a Zambian community achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

On Sunday 16th October 2011, Professor Paul Morgan, will run the Cardiff Half Marathon in aid of the initiative Go Zambia.

Led by Professor Judith Hall, Head of the Department of Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine at the School, Go Zambia aims to foster a multi-professional link between Cardiff and Chongwe in Zambia.

The purpose of this link is to support the Zambian community in achieving the Millennium Development Goals which include reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and achieving universal primary education.

Along with the School of Medicine, the initiative also aims to enable individuals from diverse professional backgrounds to get involved in the community-community link. Local schools in south Wales, for example, could learn about the African way of life and it is also hoped that Go Zambia will aid the development of cross sector collaborations and partnerships focussed on innovation, enterprise and engagement activity.

Speaking about his fundraising efforts, Professor Morgan said: “I am getting out my running shoes once again for an important new cause, Go Zambia.  This is a community to community medical project meant to involve more of you in the School of Medicine, clinicians and scientists, perhaps even managers and planners.  The Millennium Development Goals are way behind schedule, we need to do more. Women are dying. Children are dying. The Zambia project wants to examine the whole community to see how we can make a bigger and better contribution to the Millennium Goals.”

Go Zambia builds on the success of Professor Hall’s Go Africa initiative, which raised funds on behalf of the charity Mothers of Africa. To sponsor the Dean, please go to http://www.justgiving.com/Paul-Morgan5

Post-race aches and pains

Physiotherapy students on hand at the 2010 Cardiff Half Marathon

Runners competing in the Cardiff Half Marathon can get help with their post-race aches and pains thanks to a team of physiotherapists from the University.

40 physiotherapy undergraduate students and professional clinicians from the School of Healthcare Studies will be on hand at the end of the 13.1 mile race to provide soft tissue massages to the thousands of competitors taking part.

This year there will also be a team of physiotherapy staff and student runners taking part in the marathon, giving them a different perspective on the event. As part of the University’s Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre, the students will be raising money for Arthritis Research UK.
