High Profile appointments
Two separate sets of high-profile appointments have underlined Cardiff’s position as a centre for highly-regarded academics across a range of disciplines.
Three University Professors have been appointed as chairs of the subject sub-panels for the nationwide 2014 Research Exercise Framework (REF). Chosen for their high standing in their respective academic communities, each chair will lead a sub-panel of other experts in assessing UK research in their field.
Meanwhile, four University representatives have been appointed to the new Science Advisory Council for Wales. The Council will report and provide advice to the Welsh Assembly Government on a range of scientific issues and also consider how science is used for national development.

Apply for Research Committee Funds
The University Research Committee works to build Cardiff’s research reputation and has launched two new Research Initiatives- a high profile series of Cardiff University Distinguished Lectures and the Large Research Equipment fund.
Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Graham Hutchings
As part of a new initiative to raise the profile of research at Cardiff University with the international academic community, the Research Committee is launching a high-profile series of Cardiff University Distinguished Lectures.
Professor Graham Hutchings, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Chair of the Research Committee, explains: “The Distinguished Lecture Series has the specific objective of contributing to the establishment and consolidation of Cardiff’s international reputation for academic impact. By inviting a high-profile lead speaker to deliver a key-note lecture as part of a wider programme of activities, Schools and therefore the University, will also have an opportunity to showcase excellent research to a series of eminent and influential guest speakers, as well as to a wider audience.”
Academic schools are invited to apply to the Distinguished Lecture Series fund which is available through Research Committee Initiative funds. A fund of £25K is available for session 2010/ 11 of which up to £5K is available to support each of the four lectures which are broadly focused on the following four subject areas: Biomedical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities (loosely based upon the four main REF panels and reflecting the breadth of Cardiff’s research). A further £5K will be retained centrally to help fund publicity for events.
The deadline for applications is Monday 31st January 2011.
Large Research Equipment Fund
Academic Schools are also invited to apply for the Large Research Equipment Fund (LREF). An allocation of £1M for session 2010/11, reducing to £500K for 2011/12 is available to support equipment replacement at a proposed minimum threshold of £200K.
The LREF will be used for replacing large items of research equipment which, normally, are required for use by more than one school. In this context, ‘replacement’ would include not only replacing equipment which is inadequate or obsolete (for example, through upgrading to a model with higher capacity or specification), but also through replacing with equipment which provides the required service through a substantially different or totally new technological approach. Applications should demonstrate how the equipment will meet a strategic need for participating schools, such as enhancing their capacity to secure external research funds.
The deadline for applications is Monday 10th January 2011 and Monday 4th April 2011.
