Background and History
The Inaugural Welsh Varsity Match between Cardiff University and Swansea University was played in 1997 at Cardiff Arms Park. The highly successful "Varsity" model was adopted and since continued annually with all proceeds from the event going to Oxfam.
In its early years, the Varsity Match was held alternatively at Cardiff Arms Park and St Helens, the home of Swansea Rugby Club. In 2003 and until 2007 the match’s venue was the neutral ground of the Brewery field in Bridgend before returning to the home/away format.
The Welsh Varsity has developed into a showpiece event for talented young rugby playing students who use the occasion to represent their respective Universities and showcase their talents. Last year’s attendance was over 5,000 and the event raised an impressive £7,000 for the Welsh Charitable Trust. Given the publicity the event receives, sponsors are keen to show their much appreciated support in exchange for exposure to a vast student population and the South Wales community.
Cardiff University Rugby Club produced an outstanding display to become 19-9 victors over Swansea University in this year’s annual Welsh Varsity match. Over 8,000 supporters made their way to Cardiff Arms Park on 23rd April for the event which proved to be a fitting celebration of the University’s 125th Anniversary.
