Performance: Cardiff pair win Silver in EUSA Rowing
25 August 2010
Imogen Evans and Emma Cockcroft have won a Silver medal at the European Universities Rowing Championships.
Having had another successful season on the British Universities circuit Imogen and Emma were selected to represent Britain in the Women’s Pair in the European Universities Rowing Championships. The event was held in Amsterdam last weekend. The racing started on Friday with the traditional ‘race for lanes’ and having secured a good position for Sunday’s final Imogen and Emma had a ‘rest’ day on the Saturday. The pair’s from Hamburg and Eindhoven Universities were identified as the main competition in what was tipped to be a very close final. It certainly didn’t disappoint and Imogen and Emma must be congratulated on winning an outstanding Silver medal after just losing out to the pair from Hamburg but edging Eindhoven into third place by a margin of less than half a second.
This result is thoroughly deserved after all the hard work the pair have put in through the last 2-3 years. Imogen started rowing less than 2 years ago so deserves to be congratulated on the progress she has made and the commitment shown to train at least once, and often twice a day whilst undertaking an undergraduate degree in Psychology. As part of the GB Under 23 set up Imogen has a very bright future in the sport and along with Emma recently qualified as part of a composite boat to row in the Henley Royal Regatta which is an event of huge international pedigree. Emma has recently completed her time as an undergraduate student in Physiology and now moves on to pastures new. In her time at Cardiff University Emma has helped to raise the profile of Rowing and achieved some outstanding results both in the Universities circuit and at National Championships. As such, Cardiff University Sport would like to wish Emma all the best for the future and congratulate both rowers on another fantastic year.
Head of Sport, Stuart Vanstone commented ‘Rowing is a very demanding and time consuming sport, combining it with full-time academic study is often complicated and requires much commitment, time management as well as being very organised! Emma and Imogen have continued to prove they can cope with these demands and have set the standards for the rest of our students to follow.’
