Facilities: University Groundsman receives prestigious award
10 June 2010
Cardiff University grounds supervisor Andrew Davies has recently won the Institute of Groundsmanship Fred Cox award for best achievement in South Wales.
Andrew is part of the University Sports Fields – Llanrumney team which look after the 33 acre site. The staff are not only challenged by the unreliable British weather but also the vast amount of fixtures they host week to week. From hosting mainly football and rugby through the winter the pitches are converted to cricket squares in the Summer and as such require a diverse knowledge of grounds upkeep and development. Andrew must be congratulated on receiving the coveted award and for his service to Cardiff University to date.
Head of Cardiff University Sport Stuart Vanstone commented ‘We’d like to congratulate Andrew on winning the Fred Cox award which is a reflection of his hard work and development as a groundsman. The whole team of staff at the University Sports Fields - Llanrumney must also be applauded for their hard work in maintaining the quality of pitches on the site all year round. We have had senior international rugby teams, professional football teams and various international sporting events on the site this year and received positive feedback throughout.’
