“Patient Engagement in Healthcare Improvement: A Realist Analysis”

Cardiff Business School are currently seekign applications for a fully-funded PhD Studentship titled “Patient Engagement in Healthcare Improvement: A Realist Analysis”, supervised by Professor Martin Kitchener from the Business School, and co-supervised by Professor Davina Allen from the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies.

The studentship will commence in late September 2012.

Who is Eligible?

The University is seeking exceptional applicants with a first-class or very good upper second Honours degree, or a Masters degree with an average mark of at least 70%. Students of any nationality (UK/EU and International) are eligible to apply, though only UK/EU fees will be covered.

Funding

The award will cover the cost of UK, EU or International tuition fees and a contribution towards living expenses for a maximum of three/four years.

Project Description

The PhD project will build on current research activity in the School to examine how hospital-level efforts to engage with patients are being used as sources of management information for service improvement. Specifically, the study will employ realist analysis to examine three modes of information gathering from patients: formal complaints, solicited patient stories, and in-situ interventions during interaction with caregivers.  The processes (how information is collected and used) and the outcomes of each mode will be examined in comparative-intensive hospital case studies. The primary output of this research will be an evidenced-based and theoretically-informed response to the following series of questions concerning attempts to integrate patient-derived information into improvement efforts: what works, for whom, how, and in what context?

Cardiff Business School was ranked 4th out of 90 UK business schools in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and ‘excellent’ for teaching.  Lively, elegant, confident and cosmopolitan, the city of Cardiff offers an excellent location in which to study.  Students benefit from the combination of a small, friendly, inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of an ambitious and progressive capital city.
