New Channel 5 series featuring SONMS staff and graduates premieres Wednesday 8th August
6 August 2013
A new documentary series will air this week, featuring nurses from Cardiff and Vale. Two of the nurses featured will be SONMS PhD student and staff member Nicola West, and SONMS associate lecturer and graduate Louise Poley.
The show, entitled Nurses, is a fly-on-the-wall documentary series by Channel 5. It will follow the work of men and women throughout the Health Board as they perform clinical and supportive duties.
A Channel 5 representative said, “Nurses are in the front line of today’s NHS… What they do and how they do it is not just the subject of intense political debate, it’s absolutely fundamental to what happens to all of us when we get ill.”
Nikki will appear in episodes 2 and 6 of the programme, due to air 14th August and 11th September respectively. She was followed by cameras for 3 months earlier in 2013 - across her clinical duties as the only Consultant Breast Nurse in Wales and her work at Cardiff University, where she is a lecturer and PhD student. The film crew even joined her on a recent trip to London, during which she came second in the British Journal of Nursing Oncology Nurse of the Year award.
Louise will appear in episode 4 of the programme, due to air 28th August. The main focus of her work with the series was her clinical involvement with vulnerable groups; most notably around the issues of homelessness and substance misuse. Louise qualified in 1991 and immediately began working in addictions care. She has worked in the field ever since and is now positioned as Consultant Nurse in Substance Misuse. Louise is currently involved in a number of television and video projects, including a promotional video for Mental Health Nursing at Cardiff University.
The first episode of Nurses will be shown on Channel 5 at 8pm on Wednesday 7th August.
