Cardiff University launches the School of Healthcare Sciences

1 September 2013

Following a process of consultation and approval by the University Council, the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences is pleased to announce that a new School has been created which incorporates the activities of the former Schools of Healthcare and Nursing and Midwifery Studies.

The new School has been named the School of Healthcare Sciences, with Professor Sheila Hunt assuming the role of Dean and Head of School. The School of Healthcare Sciences encompasses nine fields across health care: Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging; Radiotherapy and Oncology; Intra and Perioperative Practice; Medical Illustration; Midwifery; Nursing; Occupational Therapy; Operating Department Practice and Physiotherapy.

This concentration of expertise provides an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary study, and joint undergraduate learning and teaching opportunities, which will not only provide students with a more holistic approach to health education, but will prepare them for employment in an inter-professional working environment. In the same way, staff will have the opportunity to work across the disciplines to offer relevant clinical knowledge from different perspectives and identify areas of commonality for development.

The School of Healthcare Sciences brings together well-established histories of best practice in student experience and academic standards and offers a wide array of world-leading clinical skills laboratories, research centres and teaching facilities, using cutting-edge technology.

A greater selection of clinically relevant postgraduate education and continuing professional development courses will soon be available, as will new and exciting research opportunities. The formation of a new School brings together a vibrant and growing postgraduate education community offering a rich environment for personal and professional development.

With a strong international profile including overseas contracts from Oman, Malta and Hong Kong, the School is well placed to leverage its broad, inter-professional expertise to develop new multi-disciplinary health education programmes targeted to meet the needs of  our global partners while creating new international collaborative projects and world leading research within the allied healthcare, nursing and midwifery professions.

Over the coming months the School will be updating its academic and professional support structures to ensure the needs of our students, professional bodies and external stakeholders are met.
