BSc (Hons)/Graduate Diploma in Community Health Studies & Specialist Practice Qualification (BSc)

This programme is designed to prepare practitioners for working in a complex and dynamic community setting.  On successful completion, this programme leads to the award of the BSc (Hons) in Community Health Studies, and the NMC-recordable Specialist Practitioner qualification in the following areas:

• District Nursing
• Practice Nursing

Applicants who already possess an undergraduate degree in a related discipline and who utilise credit from that degree to gain admission to the programme will be registered for the Graduate Diploma in the field of specialist practice studied.

The programme consists of two core generic modules and two core specialist modules equating to at least 600 hours of student engagement.  The focus of learning and teaching is to link theory with practice and therefore the modules are split into 50% theory and 50% practice.  The theory covered during the modules will prepare students for the supervised clinical practice they will be undertaking during the scheme.

For the practice element of the course students will work alongside a Practice Teacher or Sign off mentor.  A total of 600 hours in practice must be achieved during the programme.  Applicants must have the agreement of their employers to release them for the necessary theory and practice hours.

Programme Structure

All students will attend the two core generic modules and two core specialist modules that apply to the particular pathways, District Nursing and General Practice Nursing.

Length of Programme

Part-time modular route: 2- 3 years part time.

Entry Requirements

The overall entry criteria for the BSc (Hons) in Community Health Studies are as follows:

• Current level 1 registration on the NMC register;
• Normally a minimum of one year post registration experience;
• 120 credits at level 1 in nursing or a subject area relevant to nursing verified by certification (e.g. Certificate in Professional Practice,);
• 120 credits at level 2 in nursing or a subject area relevant to nursing verified by certification (e.g. Diploma in Professional Practice, Diploma in Nursing);

OR

• Relevant prior learning or experience that allows for the necessary 120 credits at level 1 and 120 credits at level 2 to be accredited via Cardiff University APEL procedure by portfolio and APEL panel verification as per Cardiff University guidelines;

AP(E)L at level 3 is not permitted for this course of study.

Applicants whose first language is not English or Welsh are required to provide proof of their proficiency in the English Language and must have satisfied the English Language requirements for the University and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, no more than 2 years before the date of application.

All offers made are subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Bureau Disclosure, ISA registration and Occupational Health screening which will determine fitness for practice.

Additional entry criteria for entry to specific Specialist Practice pathways are as follows:

District Nursing

First level nurse trained in general nursing or first level nurse trained in adult nursing.

Practice Nursing

First level nurse trained in general nursing or first level nurse trained in adult nursing.

First level nurse trained in the nursing of sick children or first level nurse trained in children’s nursing

Mental Health Nursing

First level nurse trained in the nursing of persons suffering from mental illness or first level nurse trained in mental health nursing.

Funding

Funding for module fees is available from the Welsh Assembly Government via the National Leadership and Innovation Agency for Healthcare (NLIAH). Funding is available to individuals who work within the NHS in Wales and the number of funded modules available for each discipline is set each year by NLIAH using workforce planning figures.

Students are also able to self fund and can apply locally, nationally and from overseas.
